Mother’s Farm

One day I Googled “alpacas in Japan,” and this place popped up. There’s another farm in Tochigi Prefecture that is just an alpaca farm with hundreds of alpacas, but it is about two hours away by local train. I will have to go there some other day. Mother’s Farm is in Chiba, and is only a little over an hour away. They not only have alpacas, but animal shows, good food, flower fields, and other events.

I went with a friend from college and met her at Kisarazu Station. From there, there is a bus that takes you to the farm for 870¥. There’s a free bus from Kimitsu Station, the next stop over, but it arrives a bit too late. The bus is like 20 or 30 minutes.

The entrance fee was about 1400¥ on the weekend, and the tour was another 1400¥. I’m really glad we did the tour because that’s the only way you can see the alpacas. The tour shows you other things, like cows, various barn animals, etc. You get to ride in a cow tram pulled by a tractor. All the workers are super friendly and excited.

My favorite part of the tour was obviously feeding the alpacas. You can also feed sheep, but they are so aggressive. I tried to pet the alpacas and take a selfie with them, but they were just focused on eating the food. They were all shaved and not as cute as when they are fluffy. I will have to come back in the winter when they have their fur.

Another cool part about the tour is that you can see a live herding. The tour guide calls upon a dog and the dog herds the sheep. It was so funny because the sheep wouldn’t go to the back of the crate, so some of the sheep couldn’t get all the way in. I think there is also one alpaca that is a herder, but on our tour we only got to see the dog. That alpaca is fluffy because I don’t think they use its fur for anything.

After the tour we had a small lunch. The food is kind of expensive, but it is really good. There are a lot of barbecue restaurants that serves meat that are from their own cows. We ate at a normal restaurant and I had curry with rice shaped like an alpaca.

There is so much to do at this farm. It seems like a farm amusement park, but it is also educational. There are hamster balls, craft making classes, bungy jump, etc. just to name a few. I want to do more activities the next time I come here.

Another reason I wanted to come was because of the flower fields that remind me of Hokkaido. Apparently there are also yellow flower fields, but we didn’t see them. Next time!

There are a lot of activities geared towards kids obviously, but we enjoyed ourselves so much. One place that is very kid-friendly is the petting zoo. You can up close with wallabies, tortoises, sheep, and capybara. The capybara was walking around like it owned the place. Actually, I think it was trying to escape. It was so cute and I got to pet it!

The last activity we did was rabbit and guinea pig petting. You line up to go into a room and they give you a towel and gloves. You can choose what whether you want a rabbit or a guinea pig and you just sit on a bench at pet it. It is so relaxing and the animals are so calm. I wonder if they like being pet all day…

It looks like GiGi! All animals hold out their arms like that when I carry them.

I had an amazing time and I’m going to make my new study abroad friends come with me in the winter. Thanks for reading!
