My Japan AirBNB Experience

During my internship in Tokyo I stayed in an AirBNB apartment in Shin-Urayasu (one station away from Maihama, the Tokyo Disney Resort). You can find the listing here. I originally wanted to stay in a sharehouse, which is where you usually get your own room but share common living spaces with other people. There are sharehouses that are exclusively for foreigners or Japanese respectively, and also ones that are mixed so that you can get an intercultural experience while also practicing your Japanese and allowing Japanese to practice their English. However, most sharehouses require that you take a tour of the property first and then sign the contract in person, meaning that if anything went wrong I would get to Japan and not have any housing. Because my school gave me a grant for my unpaid internship they were technically somewhat responsible for my well being abroad, and they wanted to know my address in Japan before I left, so AirBNB was the best option for me since I can book it online months in advance. I wanted to be more close to the major areas of Tokyo, but it is super expensive and was out of my budget. My apartment is technically in Chiba Prefecture (Tokyo Disneyland isn’t actually in Tokyo by the way), but was only a little over 30 minutes to my internship by train and 30 to 60 minutes from most fun areas of Tokyo, so it wasn’t bad at all.

My apartment was a one room apartment with a shower/bath, laundry machine, double-size bed, basic amenities, TV, and functioning kitchenette. Unfortunately I didn’t cook while I was there because I didn’t want to buy any supplies or ingredients since it was only two months. There was no wifi in the apartment, but I was fine because I had perfectly working data and cell service. I felt very safe at all times and the neighborhood is a very quiet and residential. The apartment is part of a building of small one-room apartment units.

The walk to the station was a little far, between 15-20 minutes, but I didn’t mind. Although you have to cross a bridge and a dark path to get to the apartment, I felt safe as people of all ages regularly walk through there. If I was a little bit scared I would just try to walk near someone else and obviously exercise common sense. There are signs that warn you against perverts, but I’m pretty sure they were put there a long time ago when one incident occurred in the area. Nothing at all happened while I was living there.

The most obvious perk about the apartment was that it was one station away from Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea. I got a commuter pass from my work to my home station, and in between my commute was the Disney Resort so I could go there unlimited times for free during the validity of my pass. I sometimes would go to the Disney mall on my way home from work. I ended up going to Disney Sea and Disneyland a total of four times thanks to my apartment’s location.

My host was super nice and responsive. He spoke English and even greeted me when I left and called me a taxi since my suitcases were super long by the end of the trip and there was no way I was lugging those by myself to the station. I wrote to him in Japanese via the AirBNB app, but I was able to communicate with no problems. There are many other Japanese AirBNB hosts that are bilingual and some that are not, so you just have to make sure what you are getting yourself into before you book your trip.

In my opinion, Japan is a safe place in general, so AirBNB will most likely be safe. Always exercise caution and contact the host with any questions before you book. If you feel uneasy for any reason, just find a different place. The closer you are to all the popular places in Tokyo the more expensive it will be. Overall I had a great experience and I would definitely stay there again!
