Experiencing Noh Theater

One of the field trips this semester was getting to experience traditional Noh theater. I have heard of Noh before, but have never seen it or known much about its techniques. I’m thankful for this once in a lifetime experience of getting to go backstage and I hope to be able to see a performance someday.

The first thing we learned was how to sing a very classic Noh song. You have to sing in a very loud voice with good tone. The pitches in this song were very easy to follow with only a few modulations, but I was very confused as to what key to sing in.

そういう能力をまだ身につけません…Next we learned how to walk on the stage. You have to have good posture and walk steadily without moving up and down. I don’t think I mastered this move.

We also were shown different types of kimonos and masks; each one signifies a different character and age. I was a volunteer that tried on the “angel” kimono. The slight movements of the mask signifies emotions, but it is up for the audience to interpret why the character feels a particular way. The teacher said much of Noh is the creativity in how you choose to interpret the story. We were allowed to take photos of the masks and kimonos, but they are not to be uploaded publicly.

We were also introduced to the Noh stage. The main area represents the “living reality,” while characters that enter from the side are from the cosmos (heaven or hell). The pillars are extremely important on the stage because they keep the performers from falling off as it is very hard to see when wearing the masks. If they are unsure where they are, they can look for the pillars.

The teacher was so friendly and beautiful and I’m thankful for this experience. There are so many things I have yet to experience in Japanese culture.
