Shōdo Island

Shōdo island is an island off of Takamatsu. We took a short one-hour ferry ride and explored five interesting places of interest. I didn’t know there were so many different little islands so I’m glad that I got to experience something so new.

The first place we visited was the olive museum. The local product on Shōdoshima is olive, although ironically the first trees planted were imported from the U.S. The museum has a small store, olive tree exhibit, restaurant, and a beautiful windmill. It was a short visit but it was so relaxing.

The second place was the area where they filmed the famous movie, Twenty-Four Eyes. Now I have never heard of this movie, but it is apparently very popular in classic Japanese literature as it was based on a book. The story is about a teacher who comes to the island to teach some school kids, but then the war breaks out and tragedy occurs. I really want to see the movie now although it will probably be super sad. It was so fun walking around the small town and looking at an old Japanese school, right by the water.

After the visit we ate lunch at a nearby hotel. The meal was a set Japanese menu and it was sure an experience. I didn’t know much of what I was eating, but it was really delicious except for the sea snail creature which had a very unique taste.

The third place was a local soy sauce museum. They welcomed us when we came and left and it was so cute. They gave us samples and one of the samples was a salad dressing, and it was the best Japanese dressing I have ever tasted. A bottle costs over $80 so I of course didn’t buy it. It is amazing to see how many things are manufactured on this small island.

For the fourth place, we took a cable car all the way up into the mountains. Unfortunately it was very foggy so we couldn’t see the good view, but I enjoyed myself anyway.

The last place was visiting some very old tree, but I don’t remember because I was asleep in the bus. I always fall asleep when I’m in a moving vehicle.

Super busy day in Shōdoshima, but tomorrow travel to Kyoto so I am very excited!
