Nara

On the last day of my vacation we went to Nara, a little over an hour’s drive from Kyoto. Nara is famous for its deer that roam freely and eagerly await tourists who feed them the special cracker that locals sell throughout the park. I’m not actually sure if the that is healthy for them but there are so many of them that they must be alive somehow. I wonder how they all survive on just those crackers; there must be some other place the deer go to get real deer food.

I was so engrossed in petting the cute deer and taking pictures that I accidentally stepped in a bit of their poo. I was able to wipe it off my shoe easily so it was no problem, but it was unfortunate. I think petting almost any sort of animal is so therapeutic so it was nice to touch the cute deer. They even “bow” to you to signal that they would like it if you would feed them.

In the park there is Nara Shrine. It is a beautiful place with lots of grass (you can’t walk on it though) and giant Buddhas. It is super crowded because of all the tourists but it is a nice place to visit to view the amazing architecture.

Lunch was eaten at a beautiful old Japanese style inn. The menu was Japanese and I really enjoyed the sashimi. My grandma has been going there for over 30 years so all the people there welcome her by name when she enters.

We then went to Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for the hundreds of tori red gates. This was my first time there, and it is super interesting. I unfortunately could not spend too much time there as I had to take the bullet train back to Tokyo, but I’m glad I got to see a new place I hadn’t been too.

Although my time was short, I am so thankful to have traveled to such fun places on an amazing tour with my grandma. This tour is her 140th tour she has escorted to Japan, although she has been to Japan many more times than that. I have a long way to go to catch up with my grandma!
