Nikko Day 1

This week was a holiday so we got to go to Nikko for a program field trip. The trip was free and I have never been to Nikko before, so I was quite excited to go. Although the visit was only one night, it was just enough time for me to relax before I had to go right back to writing papers.

The bus from Chiba to Nikko is only about 3 hours, but we made some stops along the way. The major stop was at Toshogu Shrine where we stayed for three hours. The shrine is famous for housing the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is also known for some sleeping cat statue but my friend and I looked and looked but could not find it anywhere.

My friend and I decided to do our own thing instead of hang out in a big group as everyone tends to walk too slowly together. I really enjoyed getting to know him better one on one and I will miss seeing all my new friends once this program is over. Instead of eating a typical lunch, we went and shared a Nikko cheesecake. It was pretty big but I was able to eat a good portion of it.

On our way back to the bus through the shrine, we saw a man with a pet ferret. He was super nice and let us pet it and even pick it up for a picture. We tried to talk a bit with him in Japanese. That was probably the best part of the shrine for us.

After that excursion we went to the hotel. We stayed at the Ayasa Hotel, which is supposedly one of the best hotels in the area. I can honestly say it is a hotel that my grandma would stay in; the rooms are ryokan style and very big and clean, very big buffet breakfast, several onsens to choose from, etc. I wish we could have stayed longer in the hotel.

Our dinner that night was really good. We got our own private Japanese style room with a traditional Japanese menu. The food just kept coming and coming and we were all quite full by the end of the night.

The night ended perfectly with some relaxation in the onsens. I went to the basement one and the rooftop one. Apparently there is one more in another building, but I didn’t get a chance to go to that one. We stayed maybe 2 hours in it and all the girls enjoyed bonding together while talking. It was sure a highlight of the trip for me.
