I went to a lot of art museums and events in Japan, so I thought I’d go to one here in California! A friend of mine I met in Japan during my study abroad experience was visiting San Francisco, so I met up with her and a few others and we went to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Let me just say, I have nothing against modern art, but SOME of the pieces are just a bit…like did that even take any effort? Are you really going to tell me that there is some deep symbolic meaning behind it? I am in no way an artist so I don’t feel qualified to comment on the complexities of someone else’s art, but I think we can all agree that some exhibits are a bit mind boggling on how they got chosen to be in a museum where people pay over $20 to enter.

いい色ですが、その絵はちょっと…The first art where we were like “did this really take effort?” was in this two gradient painting. It was made up of two big canvases that were stuck side by side and painted with different plain colors. At least the color choices weren’t bad.

Another really interesting exhibit that I unfortunately couldn’t take photos of was one that was just a full room with blank canvases. There were six canvases on either side of the walls and one right in the middle. The canvases on the side only said the words “DONT TOUCH” in small black lettering, while the middle one said “TOUCH.” My friend’s boyfriend tried to go to the middle one and touch it, but the security lady stopped him. Apparently this work was supposed to represent Jesus’s last supper with his apostles, and the “touching” theme was supposed to model when Jesus tells Mary Magdalene in John 20:17 to “not hold on to him.” I like the whole Biblical comparison and I can see where he was trying to go with it, but at first glance it just looks like the artist procrastinated and needed to come up with something. I like that it educates some people on this interesting Biblical fact though.

Below are just some other nice photos that were taken that day. Now I want to go to some LA art museums!

Thank you Yukimi for the photos!
